   how to impact an Impact

One day we received a call from a truck driver. He said he was coming to our facility to pick up an OR42 magnet.

OK.

With an air-ride trailer.

Not OK.

A long conversation ensued while we tried to explain to him the impossibility of securing a 6400 kG load inside a trailer. "What if someone swerves in front of you on the interstate and you lock up the brakes. That magnet is going to go right through the front of the trailer." He agreed to come and look at the load and then make a recommendation to his boss.

When he arrived, he agreed that it was a very bad idea. Then he said "there's something wrong with the load I am carrying. Can you take a look at it?" "Sure", we said. As he swung the trailer around outside to back into the loading dock, we heard a mighty thump and saw the rear doors of the trailer bulge out 6 inches and then snap back like a special effect from a Terminator movie. When we opened the door, this is what we saw.

Now, we know a little bit about how this occurred. This trailer was packed by two foreign nationals who came to the US to buy the scanner and install it in Mexico. The company that sold them the scanner was supposed to pack and transport it, but they never showed up at the warehouse. These fellows, running into a time crunch and not familiar with logistics or business practices here in the USA, panicked and did the best they could. They had one day to load the trailer and zero support or help. The whole situation could have been avoided if the dealer (who we know well) had just been honorable about the situation. But that's how many things get onto the Wall.

By the way, this scanner is up and running today. All major damage was repaired or replaced with parts from JDI Solutions. And we shipped the magnet down on a flatbed trailer the next day.
